Research studies

Massey University Study (2021) discovered that the 10 largest websites in the world generate as much carbon dioxide emissions per hour as the United Kingdom does from energy consumption over 11 days.

OVHcloud Study (2021) estimated that the internet accounts for about 4% of the total global electricity consumption, which is expected to rise to 8% by 2030.

Yale University Study (2020) found that just 1% of the most visited websites produce 50% of the carbon emissions associated with the internet.

Environmental impact

Climate change: Carbon emissions from websites contribute to global warming and climate change.

Air pollution: Servers and data centers powering websites emit greenhouse gases and other pollutants, which can lead to health problems.

Resource depletion: The extraction of resources for the production of devices and energy needed to run websites can lead to the depletion of natural resources.

Carbon footprint audit

There are 2 options for the audit: initial and advanced.

The initial audit doesn’t require access to the admin panel or other credentials, as it is performed externally.

The advanced audit requires access to the part of your website that needs to be reviewed. To ensure GDPR compliance and enhance security, we anonymize databases containing users’ data.

Initial audit

Technical review. Checkup from the outside, security, vulnerabilities, outdated versions.
Quality and accessibility. UI/UX issues, accessibility shortcomings, mobile version, performance.
SEO review. Analysis with few special tools, traffic analysis, redirects, and errors.

The result is a PDF file with information about all the found issues and our suggestions + one call with our team to explain the problems and ways of solving them. The initial audit usually takes 40–50 working hours and spans a timeline of 1–2 weeks.

Advanced audit

The advanced audit can be tailored to focus on specific areas, such as security or performance. For this, we will need access to the codebase. The audit is conducted by highly skilled developers who are well-versed in industry best practices. The duration and cost of the audit depend largely on what needs to be analyzed and the depth of the analysis required. Usually, it takes 40–100 hours. The timeline is 2–4 weeks.

The result is the document with all the found issues and our suggestions on how to fix it. The team will present and discuss these issues during a dedicated call.
